THE COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK

A crop can change the story.

Removing a distracting edge helps. Removing context can mislead. Keep enough of the scene to explain what viewers are looking at.

01 / PEOPLE

Leave room around gestures

A hand pointing at a product, a person's gaze, or the space between two people may carry the meaning of the photo. A tighter crop is not automatically a better crop. Inspect the small thumbnail after export; a face near the edge can feel cramped there.

02 / PRODUCTS

Keep the full outline when it matters

For a product listing, do not cut straps, handles, feet, or the shadow that shows how the object sits. A square frame can be useful for a consistent grid, but a narrow item may need more breathing room than the square first suggests.

03 / DOCUMENTARY IMAGES

Do not remove material context

A photo used as evidence or documentation can tell a different story if surroundings disappear. Preserve the original and use the cropped version as a presentation copy, clearly labelled when context matters.

FRAME REFERENCE

What the ratio controls

A ratio describes the shape, not a fixed pixel size. A 1:1 crop can be 800 × 800 or 2000 × 2000. The number of remaining source pixels determines how large the saved crop is.

ShapeExampleCheck before saving
1:1 squareA tidy product or profile gridAre long items or hands cut at the edges?
4:5 portraitA vertical image with more heightIs there useful space above and below the subject?
16:9 wideA broad article or presentation frameDoes the subject still read at thumbnail size?
Free / customA destination with its own specificationHave you checked that platform's actual dimensions?
PRECISE EXAMPLE

Crop first. Resize second.

Say your original is 3000 × 2000 px and you select a 1500 × 1500 square. The crop contains 2.25 million original pixels. It does not become sharper if you later export it at 3000 × 3000. For an exact 1000 × 1000 destination, save the crop here, then use Resize Image to scale that square down.

PNG preserves transparent edges. JPG fills transparency with white. WebP is useful where the destination accepts it. The editor limits output to 24 megapixels to avoid memory failures on smaller devices.

FILE HANDLING / LOCAL

Your selection remains on your device.

This crop tool runs in the browser. The photo is not sent to our server for cropping. The downloaded result is a separate file; keep the original when you may need a different composition or the uncropped context later.

A few details that save rework

01

Can I move a selected crop?

Yes. Drag inside the white frame. Pull its lower-right corner to resize; drag outside to draw a new frame. The number fields provide exact placement.

02

Why does a tiny crop look soft when enlarged?

The crop only keeps pixels that already existed inside the chosen area. A 300 × 300 region has limited detail even when displayed in a much larger box.

03

Does a ratio guarantee a platform-ready file?

No. Shape and dimensions are separate requirements. After cropping, check the destination's size and file type rules.
